American Express offers grocery shoppers some pretty attractive cards, including the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express with a 3% cash back on purchases at U.S. supermarkets, up to $6,000 per year (then 1%).
The Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express also offers 2% back on gas and department stores, which means if you've either got a long commute or fancy yourself a fashionista, you'll be hitting all the bonus categories this card has to offer. All this, and there is no annual fee!
If, however, you spend more than $132 per month on groceries, OR $263.92 per month on gas or shopping at department stores (or some mix of all 3) you might consider upgrading to the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express. The preferred version has an annual fee of $95, but at this level of spending the fee is offset by the cash back rewards AND you will receive higher rates of rewards for groceries (6% versus 3%) and gas and department stores (3% versus 2%).
Earn rewards faster by adding additional cards on the account for your family members. You can also earn cash back for monthly spending, like your phone bill.
As always, you can consult the American Express retail categories to see exactly what qualifies as a gas station, supermarket, or department store — most of these categories are pretty self-explanatory, but there are some things to watch out for, such as gas stations at places like Costco or Safeway don't count as a gas station.
