American Express offers grocery shoppers some pretty attractive cards, including the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express with a whopping 6% cash back on purchases at U.S. supermarkets, up to $6,000 per year. That's one of the highest bonuses for the groceries categories, but it doesn't stop there! Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express also offers 3% back on gas and department stores, which means if you've either got a long commute or fancy yourself a fashionista, you'll be hitting all the bonus categories this card has to offer. The catch? There's a $95 annual fee...but this can be easily offset by your rewards — all you would have to do is spend $132 per month on groceries, OR $263.92 per month on gas or shopping at department stores (or of course some mix of all 3). This doesn't account for the 1% cash back you get on all other eligible purchases no matter what category they're in, so you can see how the $95 annual fee can quickly become worthwhile.
Many supermarkets sell gift cards, so you can maximize your supermarket spend by purchasing gift cards to use elsewhere (think Amazon.com, Starbucks, Home Depot, and so on...). Gift cards come with a small fee, however, so make sure you're not inadvertently offsetting your rewards earnings with the added cost of these fees.
As always, you can consult the American Express retail categories to see exactly what qualifies as a gas station, supermarket, or department store — most of these categories are pretty self-explanatory, but there are some things to watch out for, such as gas stations at places like Costco or Safeway don't count as a gas station.
